ISS Hosts Interfaith Discussion Promoting Peace in the Abrahamic Traditions at the San Francisco Presidio

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA — On Easter Sunday, March 31, 2002, the Institute for Sufi Studies hosted an interfaith discussion entitled “Reflections: Inner Peace and Global Healing” to address the rising concern of promoting peace through spirituality. The event was moderated by award-winning journalist Mr. Glenn Pascall and panelists were Shah Nazar Seyyed Dr. Ali Kianfar, Dr. James Conlon, and Rabbi Rami Shapiro. The event was covered by NBC 3 News and the San Francisco Chronicle.

imageShah Nazar Seyyed Dr. Ali Kianfar is the co-founder and co-director of the International Association of Sufism and the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Sufism: An Inquiry. The spiritual son of Uwaiysi Sufi Master Moulana Shah Maghsoud, Seyyed Dr. Kianfar began his study and devotion to the discipline of Sufism in his twenties. Seyyed Dr. Kianfar has taught Sufism and Islamic Philosophy for over forty years. In addition, Seyyed Dr. Kianfar has given lectures and taught classes nationally as well as internationally. This includes speaking engagements at the United Nations, UNESCO, the University of California, Berkeley, the California Institute of Integral Studies, and the United Religions Initiative. Among his books are: The ZekrHistory of the Robe; and An Introduction to Religion. In addition, Seyyed Dr. Kianfar publishes regularly in Sufism: An Inquiry.

imageDr. James Conlon is Associate Professor of Spirituality at Holy Names College. Dr. Conlon holds degrees in chemistry, theology, social science and culture and spirituality. He is the author of several books, includingGeo-Justice: A Preferential Option for the EarthEarth Story, and Sacred Story and Lyrics for Re-Creation: A Language for the Music of the Universe. Dr. Conlon is an Adjunct Faculty member at Graduate Theological Union and Union Institute-Graduate School, as well as a Director/Chairperson, Sophia Center.

imageMr. Glenn Pascall is Senior Fellow at the Institute for Public Policy and Management, Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs, University of Washington. He is economics columnist for the Puget Sound Business Journal, and previously held the same post at the Seattle Times, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and the Seattle Weekly. Mr. Pascall has taught at the University of Virginia, Sacramento State University and Seattle Pacific University as well as the University of Washington. Pascall is author of The Trillion Dollar Budget(University of Washington Press, 1985) and (with Robert Lamson) Beyond Guns and Butter (MacMillan, 1991).
